Kate takes inspiration from her home town Whitby, and the North Yorkshire coastline

Bio

After gaining a fine art degree in sculpture and a PGCE in art, Kate went on to teach in secondary education until moving to Whitby in 2000.  Having taken time out to have a family, she continued to tutor with local adult groups, and embarked on her painting career in 2016.

Taking inspiration from in and around Whitby and the coastline where she lives, Kate draws on her sculptural background which has lead her to develop an impasto style.  Building with thick layers of oil paint in exaggerated colours, applied with a palette knife to give light, texture and atmosphere to her paintings.

This technique has become a fundamental aspect of her pieces along with a love of local craftsman-built traditional fishing boats that are the subjects of much of her recent work.
